Moving towards a faster web

The Open Browser Project, Chromium has announced an exciting update that will help users qualify not only content but the speed of its delivery with a new experiment. It will provide an indication to the user if this website is usually slow, enabling them to make a choice as to weather they want to continue here, or navigate to an alternative. As a web portal company, we welcome this move as we also have the goal of providing good digital experiences for our customers, with speed being an important component in achieving that.

Chromiums plan is to use “badging”. Badging is intended to identify when sites are authored in a way that makes them slow generally, looking at historical load latencies. They also said they may expand this to include identifying when a page is likely to be slow for a user based on their device and network conditions.

This won’t happen immediately and the roll out of this feature will happen gradually. However, if your website isn’t speedy, you are going to be left behind, regardless of how attractive and accessible the user interface and how informative the content.

If you need to to evaluate performance for your Dynamics 365 we recommend checking:

  • PageSpeed Insights, an online tool that shows speed field data for your site, alongside suggestions for common optimizations to improve it.
  • Lighthouse, a lab tool providing personalized advice on how to improve your website across performance and other best practices.
  • To learn about performance best practices, check – our learning platform with guides and codelabs on how to get your pages loading instantly.

We think this is an excellent idea. As web portal company, we welcome these types of changes as it encourages companies to deliver optimal digital user experiences. Fortunately for us, by the heavy lifting is carried out by Azure servers, and most of the configurations are optimised out of the box. We do however usually need to carry out customisations here and there to ensure everything is as snappy as possible.
